am LOVING Laura Lippman’s current blog.
When I came to write Wavewalker (book no 2), I realised I’d made a baddie in Calendar Girl (book no 1) who was just that – a baddie. Only that. And I never wanted to do it again. It was typical of a first novel (ie, all my attention was on my main protagonists – yes, there are two – and where they were going, not enough on the other characters), it worked for the story, it was useful and sensible. But it wasn’t good enough because it’s not real enough. And I’ve tried to do better ever since.
Laura says it really well in her blog here. Read it and grow, my writerly friends.
This is so true… I especially like the advice she gives of writing characters as if you are their mother. I wrote a villain in my first novel too, but I’m going to do better for book two. And better still with book three, I hope. Humans instead of villains – like the difference between character and caricature.
