a piece I wrote for What’s on Stage about the perils of ever-pricier fringe venues and the blow that (and further arts cuts) has dealt to making work in a company style, as opposed to writer-led work. And given how many writers I also know who feel they’re out there working alone in a lonely wilderness, it doesn’t seem terribly hopeful … and yet we keep on …
I hope all goes well tonight. I don’t know what the answer is. I guess the venues don’t want to take a gamble on whether or not the audience will turn up. I’ve only been to the Pleasance once, to see Memory by Jonathan Leichtenstein. Coming in from Essex, it seems more of a trek to go there than say, the Chocolate Factory. Re the cuts, I’ve already noticed some of the cheap student ticket schemes are being scrapped: we’ve great theatres on campus and in town, a non-subsidised ticket plus a train fare puts even a fringe London venue out of most student’s pockets.
