So, on the 1st June I posted about trying to say NO to more things. To things I didn’t have time to do, things I didn’t really want to do, things I feel I should do and yet don’t want to. And several of you suggested I should write about how it went …
OK. Ish. I still find myself going into the first fortnight of July with 11 evening events (3 parties, 1 dinner, 3 other people’s shows, 1 screening, 2 book readings, 1 buddhist meeting) – while also teaching 6 days full time for the Improbable impro/writing workshop, getting on with the edit!! (as ever), a very exciting meeting about some maybe-potential arts-based work, a day working on scenes for TaniwhaThames (the Shaky Isles show for Nov/Dec at Oval House Theatre), some work on a new lit project for Loughborough Junction, AND reading the books for the Green Carnation Prize.
So yes, I clearly need more No practice! But … I also turned some things down. Some of them were even things I was quite keen to do, but I just really don’t have time. Small steps then, but a start. There is a week in August where, right now, I have 4 clear days. I’m going to try to keep it that way. I love the idea of 4 whole days just making book. Let’s see how that goes …
Making a book? Do you have control over your book formats? I was told that Yann Mantel can decide his own book binding format? Do you have this written into your contacts? If you don’t want to say, that’s fine.
I’m not much interested in book binding formats, I care more about what’s IN the book, the story, the writing …
I feel equally exhausted and envious reading about your coming fortnight. Hope the stimulation from all the events and interactions, counterbalances the energy required to participate in them 🙂
Just as long as you have some time to do some inspire Theodora tweeting as well (just love the creative uses of twitter amongst the dross).
Yes, I think I do always find the work inspiring as well as challenging, especially teaching and directing – tho those are both the most knackering! And yes, Theo’s occasional tweets please me too. X
