See the post below for the initial email I shared here from Susie Maguire. Susie’s done sterling work in the past week bringing attention to this absurd decision, but I’m sure we could all be doing a bit more.
Here’s the link to the petition.
If Gwyneth Williams (Controller of BBC Radio 4) had met any of the hundreds of people I come into contact with at book events or writing courses year after year, she would have known exactly the ferocious response this idea would be met with, and have realised it couldn’t be done quietly.
Here’s just a few voicing concern : The Society of Authors, Equity, The Writers’ Guild, and a juicy piece in The Stage.
However, I’m not sure 4000+ signatures are enough, so come on you people who say you love the short story (ironically promoted by the BBC here!), get signing!
To Stella Duffy,
I listened to your short story From The River’s Mouth which was broadcast on BBC4 Extra in the week of 25th July 2011 and I absolutely loved this story – it is a gem and you are a very talented and gifted writer. I am devastated that I missed it when it was first broadcast in 2008 (I obviously was not paying attention to the radio properly) – I have listened on iPlayer, but would it be at all possible to send me a tape/or CD of this story, as I would love to be able to listen permanently whenever I liked? whenever I hear rare pieces of work like this on the radio, I always have an emotional attachment to them (like books). I wish I had written that story!
Best Wishes
