At 9am tomorrow morning, June 20th, I will be poised at my desk, ready to be given a secret first sentence and kick off the first 400 words of the UK entry for the International Short Story Day Chain Gang Challenge.
Eek.
The teams are from South Africa, some are writing in the same place, some – like us – are writing in different parts of the country, my British co-writers are Sarah Frost Mellor, Tony White, Nicholas Blincoe, Maria Roberts, Calum Kerr.
And all I have to do is write the perfect 400-word opener, from the first sentence I’ll be given at 9am. No pressure there then. Wish me luck.
How the hell do you get to hear about these fun jobs, Stell? I’ll be rooting for you as I sit in the slow train to London Waterloo tomorrow morning. Well, unless I fall asleep, that is! Good luck.
